A place for aluminum cans

HALIFAX - Do you ever wonder what the people do with those truck, car or bicycle loads of aluminum cans you see moving through the county?They are turning them into cash, and you can, too. United Salvage and Auto Inc., located on N.C. Highway 903, just east of exit 168 on Interstate 95, will buy them.“A lot of guys make a living bringing in scrap metal and cans," said yard operator Joel Boyd. “We actually have a lot of regular customers."Tommy Tart owns the company and operates out of the old Halifax Trucking Company facility. One might say he recycled it. Tart used to own a junk yard on Zoo Road, where he started out collecting junk cars, tin and appliances, but grew out of the location.He moved the business to Dunn, then again to Easton Street before finally finding the perfect location outside of Halifax.Son Jeremy Tart, warehouse manager, explained, “We buy 'special metals.' That is any metal that is non-ferrous, or what will not stick to a magnet."Actually, recycling aluminum and other small loads of scrap metal is just a small part of their operation.
